Description
50β90 Days to Maturity | Ocimum basilicum
Sweet Basil is a Non-GMO, open-pollinated heirloom annual herb suitable for USDA Zones 3 through 10. This versatile herb performs well in containers, raised beds, and traditional garden rows.
Sweet basil is widely grown for its fragrant, glossy green leaves that may sometimes show subtle purple tones. It remains one of the most popular culinary herbs due to its rich aroma and flavor. Leaves are ideal for fresh dishes, sauces, salads, and drying for later use. The delicate white to soft pink blooms attract bees and beneficial pollinators. Regular harvesting encourages fuller growth and increased leaf production.

Growing Sweet Basil
Sweet basil seeds are easy to plant in garden beds or containers. For an early start, sow indoors 6β8 weeks before the last expected frost. Plant seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil. Germination typically occurs within 5β10 days under proper conditions.
Once outdoor frost risk has passed, thin seedlings to allow approximately 12 inches between plants. Harvest leaves frequently to encourage stronger, bushier growth.
Harvesting Sweet Basil
For best flavor, harvest basil leaves in the morning after moisture has dried from the foliage. Cut stems just above a leaf node to stimulate additional branching. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant at one time to maintain plant health.
Leaves may be used fresh, frozen, or dried for later use.
About Sweet Basil Seeds
Sweet basil is valued not only for cooking but also for its ornamental beauty and pleasant fragrance. It adds visual interest and attracts pollinators in garden spaces. Fresh leaves are commonly used in pesto, pasta dishes, salads, and tomato-based recipes.
Gardening Advice
For best results, pinch off developing flower buds regularly and harvest leaves often. Use a balanced, general-purpose fertilizer to support steady growth without overfeeding.
