Description

75–85 Days to Maturity

Vates Collard Greens are a dependable heirloom variety known for producing smooth, slightly crinkled dark green leaves on vigorous, spreading plants. The foliage features noticeable pale green veins and a rich, deep color that holds well through cooler seasons.

This variety is slow to bolt and tolerates light frost, making it ideal for both spring and fall planting. Unlike looser collard types, Vates forms a compact, semi-headed plant reaching approximately two to three feet tall. Leaves are tender yet sturdy, offering excellent texture for traditional southern cooking, sautΓ©ing, steaming, and soups.

Reliable, productive, and easy to grow, Vates Collards are a staple for home gardeners.

Growing Instructions

Vates Collards tolerate mild frost and can be direct sown outdoors before the final frost date. For fall harvests, sow seeds in late summer.

Plant seeds approximately 1/4 inch deep in moist, well-prepared soil. Maintain consistent moisture during germination and early growth. Choose a sunny location with good airflow.

Thin seedlings to 6 inches apart within rows. Keep 18 inches between rows to support plant development and reduce disease risk. Water at the soil level rather than overhead to protect leaf health.

Harvest begins around 75 days. Pick outer leaves individually to allow continued production throughout the season, or harvest the entire plant at once.

Harvesting

For best texture and flavor, harvest leaves while young and tender. Regular harvesting encourages continued growth. Leaves can be enjoyed fresh or cooked and store well when refrigerated.
